How One Tiny Thing Can Change Your Day, Business and Your Life

February 28, 2024

I was studying for an upcoming lecture for my Introduction to Business and Entrepreneurship classes, and I came across the Japanese concept of Kaizen, which teaches us that making small, tiny changes to our routine and lifestyle can add up to overwhelming differences in our overall productivity, happiness, and performance.

This stood out because I’m writing my second book, and I’m a bit behind. Then it hit me that writing a page every day doesn’t seem like a lot, but if you consider that an average book might have 300 pages, I could easily write the whole thing in a year!

Or what if I were to save just $5 a day? Again, it seems perfectly doable. But by the end of the year, you’ll have saved $1,825! This would be enough for a gift-filled Christmas for family and friends, and most importantly, no credit card debt!

But the opposite is also true. Kaizen is also about how a seemingly insignificant deviation can have significant effects over time. What do I mean by that? Consider throwing a ball at a target. When we do this, our brains actually perform incredibly complex math first. When you throw that ball, you must get the angle and the force precisely right. If your angle is 5 degrees off, that might not seem like a lot, but as the ball travels, it will deviate from the intended course more and more. The further it goes, the bigger the gap becomes.

Life is like this. You might do something only very slightly different every day, but over time, that will add up to a greater and greater effect. This is particularly true in scenarios where there is a cumulative effect. But it gets even simpler than that. When we consider the “butterfly effect,” we realize that even the smallest thing can add up to having huge repercussions.

I believe the answer is to do small tasks every day, developing a habit of consistency. This habit helps you maintain discipline and focus, which are essential for achieving your goals. Small tasks may seem insignificant but are the building blocks for bigger tasks. Each small task completed correctly takes you one step closer to achieving your bigger goals. Doing little things correctly every day requires attention to detail. This habit can help you develop a critical eye for detail, which is a valuable skill in many professions. Completing small tasks correctly every day can give you a sense of achievement. This feeling of success can give you more confidence and push you to take on bigger challenges.

Doing small things correctly every day may seem insignificant, but it can have a significant impact on your life. It can help you develop good habits, achieve your goals, and avoid costly mistakes. It’s very possible. And while this isn’t exactly what we mean by kaizen, it does highlight one very important truth: tiny differences add up to huge results. So focus on the minutiae!
